On Friday Chad flew in and joined us! He and I spent the day in Santa Barbara before joining Sandy and the kids the next day. Chad didn't want to spend quite as much time traveling as we did, so he stayed home and joined us for the last week. It's a good thing he did, because our basement flooded two weeks ago.
State Street is the place to be in Santa Barbara. It is full of restaurants and shops. Above is a Himalayan restaurant, a testament to the variety offered.
We visited the Santa Barbara Mission. It was founded in 1786 by the Spanish in an attempt to hold their claim on present day California and convert natives to Christianity. It is one of 21 missions founded by Catholic Priests of the Franciscan order.
A buff Jesus?
The original floor. When the bricks were made the natives would set the bricks out to dry and occasionally animals would run crossed them leaving the print you see on the bottom right. While the Mission was interesting what we really wanted to do was take a Land Shark tour. We had tried the night before but the tour was canceled.
The Land Shark is a tour bus and boat wrapped up in one.
Starting the tour at the beach.
The Santa Barbara Courthouse and Jail.
Entering the water in the harbor.
Some seals on the buoy. The tour guide told us that this is a spot frequented by sharks for a quick meal.
More seals.
The tour guide showed us ships in the harbor owned by the rich and famous. He also showed us this boat that is used to clean up oil spills. Because the oil companies have many oil platforms out in the Santa Barbara Channel they are required to outfit and keep on standby a fleet of ships that can clean up a spill quickly.
