So there I am standing at the kitchen sink when I see out in the yard a small furry animal smaller than a rat crawling on the grass The kids were occupied elsewhere and so I quickly ran out to see if it was what I suspected. It was - a mole. Being a girl (a tomboy yes, but still a girl) I couldn't just pick it up, I had to have something. I quickly grabbed a Frisbee and a stick. Every time the mole dug down to escape me I tried to dig him out with the stick and slide him onto the Frisbee. It took 3 or 4 tries and I had to finally pick him up by the tail. I was impressed how fast he could dig and how well he could hold on to the dirt. So I brought him in and put him in a small animal carrier. Poor thing was so scared he was trying to dig his way through the plastic. By then the kids were hanging over my shoulder and shouting a hundred questions all at once. It was time to leave for Nora's swimming lessons so we shoveled in some dirt for the poor little guy to hide under and left him in the cool dark garage. I had already called Chad and warned him to be ready to give a science lesson when he go home. I spent the rest of the day saying "ask daddy when he gets home" to questions like: How do you tell a boy mole from a girl mole? When Chad arrived home the kids were so excited to tell daddy the news. By then the pet carrier was sitting in the corner of the dining room due to the heat outside. With much ceremony we carried the carrier outside to release little mole into the wilds of the Baker back yard. Many questions were asked and many were answered and the great mole saga is thankfully over.

Bible Vacation School
Crafts and Awards
Last week was Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Church. Both Nathaniel and Nora attended while I enjoyed the break and tried to paint the basement. I only got the basement half painted so stay tuned for pictures of the completed project. The kids had a great time at "Bible Vacation School" as Nora called it. The medal Nora is holding up is for Attentiveness. She was awarded one of only two given for attentiveness on Tuesday out of a total of 160 kids. Yes, I am a proud mother.
Pastor helped out with Nathaniel's class and told me at the end of the week that he was such a well behaved child. I didn't quite know what to say. So I giggled and said, "I'm glad you think so!"

The Big Boy Bed
After dragging my feet for a while we decided it was time for Nathaniel to move to a bed and out of the crib. So I cleaned off the bed and bought a bed rail. We hyped it up to Nathaniel and last Saturday night he spent his first night in the "Big Boy Bed". Now don't for one second think that we didn't know we were in for some trouble. I was really worried that even though Nathaniel can not yet open doors I was sure that he could still wreak havoc on the house if he got out of bed and I didn't know it. Well, today - three days after this experiment started he did it. I was down stairs ironing and I didn't hear him get up from his nap. In my defence I had the baby monitor on and I went up and stood by his door several times to see if I could hear him. The last time I went up I still didn't hear anything but I could smell the strong odor of diaper rash cream. Yep, you guessed it, he got into the diaper cream and had it everywhere. His face, his hands, the dresser, the light switch, the window, clothes that were sitting on top of the dresser and yes, his clothes. He was slick as a pig. I'm sure I will be finding diaper cream in odd spots for days to come.

Too many Tigers!
On Wednesday we visited the new Tiger exhibit at the Zoo with our friends the Sipps. They were pretty impressive and we even got to see one pounce on another (the tigers, not the Sipps). The Zoo had it all figured out and had a impromptu gift shop set up at the exhibit. My friend Sandy wanted to buy a stuffed tiger for Ella and when I told Nora I would not buy one for her Sandy offered to purchase a small one for Nora and a golf ball (with a tiger on it) for Nathaniel. A small voice in my head said to say no, but Nora was already in love with the "baby tiger" so I caved in. Big mistake! A half an hour later Sandy pointed out that Nora seemed to be wanting Ella's bigger tiger. I thought the two dollar upgrade was within my means and so I quietly snuck off to trade the "baby tiger" for the larger one that had the Velcro hands and feet. When I returned Nora was upset that she had gotten the big tiger and wanted her baby back. We tried to talk her out of it, but when it didn't work I had to own up to my mistake (costly as it was) and I offered to purchase a "baby tiger". I could have gone back to the gift shop again and traded one more time, but of course Nathaniel was at this time bonding with "big tiger" and I was just a little embarrassed about looking like a flaky mother who caters to every whim her child has. In the mean time Nora also said she wanted popcorn. I told her she couldn't have both a tiger and popcorn and would have to chose. She chose popcorn. I was ready to pull my hair out! My children will never again get a toy from any gift shop. Ever.

Cubbies awards
Year end awards at Church for Awana's
Nora is in the Cubbies class and she ended the year with knowing all her Bible Verses (23 verses) and received a tiny stuffed Cubbie Bear along with the badges she earned during the year. Awana's is a Bible club that meets on Wednesday night at our church. Nora just loves Awana's and is sad that Cubbies is on summer break. The teens in the back are the helpers (not cubbies ; ). Nora is in the bottom right of the picture.
The Blue and the Gray
On Saturday we visited Cow Town for "The Blue and the Gray" a Civil War reenactment. It was fun, hot and enjoyable. The kids didn't quite understand the whole idea of why adults would play dress up and they really didn't understand why I was excited to get a picture of them with a tall guy dressed in black wearing a funny hat. But it all went well and maybe when they are older they will understand more. Nathaniel (our ball obsessed boy) enjoyed an old fashioned game of Cricket while Nora and her friend Ella challenged the boundaries of what was allowed to be played with in the museum. I and our friend Matt (Ella's dad) tried out the "bike". I'm not sure what they are called, but it was sure and interesting ride with the help of an reenactor. We did not stay long enough to see the skirmish between the Union soldiers and the Confederates nor the firing of the canon but we still had a lot of fun.
