Harpers Ferry's claim to fame is not just it's location and ferry crossing the river but for the Civil War.

This is the remains of one of two armorys. There were two buildings in Harpers Ferry holding part of the US arsenal. John Brown (from Kansas, might I say) wanted to arm the slaves in the south to stir up an uprising. Here is where he came to acquire the weapons.
John Brown failed and was hung. The leader that apprehended him was US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. Lee. Remember, this is before the War. This raid of John Browns went on to start the Civil War. The town changed hands many time during the war. Keep in mind that this town not only had the arsenal but the (pre-industrial era) "factories" to make the weapons. The town was also a major river crossing and last but not least and easy boat ride away from Washington DC.
This is also know as the center of the Appalachian Trail. It is not an exact center but gaged by difficulty this is the center.
