On Tuesday morning we left the Cabin for Ouray. We had to stop in Alamosa to drop off the dogs at a boarding kennel and divide up the kids. Sandy and Vern headed to Ouray and their respective vans with the boys. Chad, Matt, Shaunda and I kept the girls and headed to Lake City where we left the pavement behind and crossed the mountains on Engineer Pass, a 4x4 road of some notoriety and part of the Alpine Loop, a connection of 4x4 roads with stunning scenery in the San Juan Mountains.
Just 10 mintues into our drive we came to the ghost town of Henson and the Ute Ulay Mine. Above is the dam that had at one time been blown up or broken through.
Everywhere we walked there was debris. Bones, shell casings, metal, broken pottery.
