A few weeks ago we went to visit our friends the "B's" in Wyoming and Dad at his cabin site in Colorado. Cheyenne, Wy was our first stop. We had picked that particular weekend because Chad wanted to see a Atlatl competition. After spending an entire morning driving around a state park Chad discovered it had been canceled but never posted on the website. Chad called the organizer and laid a well deserved guilt trip on him. After all we had been planning this trip for 6 months. Not that it was the only reason we went to Wyoming but we would have picked another date and made different plans. The competition organizer lined Chad up for some one on one instruction to compensate. In the end it worked out well.
We went hiking at Vedauwoo. It is wonderfully satisfying for the inter rock climber in all of us.
Being that Heather is 7 months pregnant she stayed down low with the youngest kids while Chad, Mike, Nora, Abby and I hiked up to the top of one of the rock piles. Piles, isn't quite the right word, they were more like hills. I had been teaching Nora this summer about maps and directions. On this trip we brought her a compass and she had a lot of fun using it while hiking.
Nora and Abby trying to read the compass. Nora doesn't yet quite understand how it works.

Climbing to the top.

Are they not cute? You can see how high we are by looking past the rock to the left of Nora.

When we came back down there were some "little bears" waiting to scare us.

"ROAR!"

I put this picture in just because I think Tim looks hilarious. I have no idea why he was doing this.
On the hike back to parking lot Nathaniel encountered a threat and had to protect his Dassah. Even at the age of 4 this boy would lay his life down for that girl. It's entirely too cute. The picture doesn't show the story but it was taken right before it happened it it's the best visual I can give you.
While the younger kids had been left below with Heather they had taken up the sport of trying to scare passing hikers with their bear like roars. One hiker roared back. This same hiker is walking towards Nathaniel and Dassah in the picture. Nathaniel however didn't recognize the hiker and when the hiker raised his arms and roared Nathaniel immediately pushed Dassah behind him and placed himself between his girl and the threat.
That's my boy!
